Institutional Background

Wayo Wayo Kibra is a registered Community Based Organization based in the slum of Kibra, Nairobi County in Kenya. We are a completely volunteer run organization, with most of our volunteers being residents of the slum. The Word (WAYO) means foot step in Kiswahili. The organization was established in 2016 with an aim of empowering young boys and girls in the area through sports.

Historical Background

There are approximately more than 800,000 million slum dwellers in Kibera in an area of 2.5 square kilometers. 75% of the population of Kibera are under the age of 18 and more than50,000 children living here are orphaned. Therefore, getting a space in the Kibra vil- lages is not that easy because of congestion and unplanned structures, Yet, in the article 31 of the UN convention on the rights of the child every child had a right to rest and leisure to engage in play and recreation activities. Kibra is the biggest slum in East and Central Africa and second biggest in Africa the slum environment is degrading and dehumanizing, characterized by abject poverty, corruption, periodic violence and contagious diseases due to environmental pollution. Wayo Wayo Kibra targets youths and children below the age of 18 dwelling in Kibra, in developing their talents and wellbeing through sports. The organization’s main aim is to ensure there is inclusivity and equitably among the children and youth of Kibra. That will be achieved through:

  • Facilitating Kibra with access to playing space
  • Provide sporting equipments
  • Organize Physical trainings, soccer leagues and Tournaments aimed at enhancing their sports talents
  • Safe spaces to share life skills and reproductive health issues
  • Organised basic leadership skills ie Coaching course,Officiating course, and conflict resolution courses
  • Engaged in Environmental issues (i.e. Clean up, exercise, and Tree planting)
  • Community outreach programs through Jump rope team
